Introducing the Aberdare Park Road Races 'Wall Of Legends'

As part of the inaugural Aberdare Park Road Races exhibition at Aberdare Library, we were delighted to launch our 'Wall Of Legends' celebrating some of the biggest and best names that have graced our historic circuit during our long history.

Each year we'll be adding more riders to the wall and celebrate the road racing stars and local legends who have entertained us over the years.

Our first inductees onto the 'Wall Of Legends' are Mike Hailwood, John Surtees, Carl Fogarty, Robert Dunlop, Ian Lougher and Davey Todd.

Mike Hailwood

Mike Hailwood, often referred to as "Mike the Bike," is a legendary figure in the world of motorcycle racing. With an incredible 14 Isle of Man TT victories and four consecutive 500cc World Championships between 1962 and 1965, Hailwood's name is synonymous with excellence. His career was marked by versatility and skill, attributes that he brought to Aberdare Park, where he left an indelible mark. Hailwood's appearances at Aberdare Park during the early years of the circuit are still talked about today, showcasing his ability to dominate any track, making him a fitting member of our Wall of Legends.

John Surtees

John Surtees holds a unique place in motorsport history as the only person to have won World Championships on both two and four wheels. Before his transition to Formula 1, where he secured the World Championship in 1964, Surtees was a motorcycle racing phenomenon, clinching seven World Championships in the 350cc and 500cc classes. His performances at Aberdare Park were nothing short of extraordinary, as he consistently mentioned his love admiration for Aberdare Park, saying ""Of all the races I did in my life, Aberdare Park was probably the one that had the most effect on me. For the first time I was no longer just a mechanic who rode a bike. The bike and I became one. We spoke to each other, we were exchanging messages through the seat of my pants. I realized that’s what you need to get the best from a piece of machinery. It shaped the mould for the rest of my racing career." Surtees' contribution to motorcycle racing and his impact on Aberdare Park's legacy ensure his place on our Wall of Legends.

Carl Fogarty

Carl Fogarty, known affectionately as "Foggy," is one of the most successful World Superbike riders of all time, with four World Championships to his name. Fogarty’s aggressive riding style and fierce determination made him a fan favourite wherever he raced. At Aberdare Park, his presence was electrifying, often setting the pace by winning three Welsh Open Titles in the late 80's. Foggy also went on to win three Isle Of Man TT's to solidify his talent on two-wheels. Fogarty's legacy at Aberdare is one of pure speed and competitive spirit, embodying the very essence of what makes road racing so thrilling. His legendary status is well-earned and proudly celebrated on our Wall of Legends.

Robert Dunlop

Robert Dunlop, a member of the iconic Dunlop racing dynasty, is remembered as one of the most courageous and determined riders in road racing history. With multiple wins at the North West 200, the Ulster Grand Prix, and the Isle Of Man TT, Dunlop's tenacity on the bike was unparalleled. His time at Aberdare Park was marked by gritty performances that demonstrated his willingness to push the limits, despite facing numerous challenges throughout his career. Dunlop as unstoppable in 1991 where he won the Welsh Open. Dunlop's resilience and success, both at Aberdare and beyond, have made him a true legend of the sport, and his name is rightfully enshrined on our Wall of Legends.

A 10-time winner at the Isle of Man TT, Lougher is known for his incredible consistency, smooth riding style, and deep understanding of the sport. Aberdare Park has always held a special place in Lougher’s heart, and he has been a frequent and successful competitor here, securing numerous victories in the Welsh Open, Park Challenge and the King of the Singles, that have delighted local fans. His dedication to the sport and his achievements at Aberdare make him a cornerstone of our Wall of Legends, celebrating a career that continues to inspire.

Davey Todd

Davey Todd is one of the brightest stars in contemporary road racing, quickly making a name for himself as a force to be reckoned with on the roads. Todd has taken the road racing world by storm, including impressive performances at the Isle of Man TT, winning the Superstock race the coveted Senior race in Race 2024, along with a spectacular weekend at the North West 200. His appearance at Aberdare Park in 2022 was nothing short of spectacular, riding for the Wilson Craig team and comfortably winning every race that he entered. As one of the modern legends of road racing, Todd’s inclusion on our Wall of Legends highlights both his accomplishments and his promising future in the sport.
